This picture of Sagebrush Steppe was taken near Vantage, WA. Sphaeralcea spp. don’t ever dominate the natural landscape, they are a component species in the community. Collectors select from often massive landscapes plants or seed from particular plants with those characteristics they want to reproduce. From the progeny that follow individual plants may be chosen individuals with unique or notable characteristics. We plant these in our gardens often ignorant of them in their place and roles in nature. We select out little jewels to place in our gardens with little understanding of the landscapes and forces they come from also losing much of those ’emotional’ impacts carried by those landscapes.
