Ginkgo_biloba_male_flower

The catkin like male inflorescenses of Ginkgo biloba held in a bundle with the leaves on a male tree. Zoom in and look all you want, you will not find any anthers or filaments hidden inside these male strobili.  These male strobili are very different in form and function than those ‘imperfect’ male ‘flowers’ that occur on dioecious angiosperms. The male strobili emerge simultaneously with the females on female plants.
