Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres was a member of the realists, who attempted to create an image that mimicked ‘reality’. It was an emphatic statement of how these artists saw the world. Ingres began painting at the beginning of the 1800’s in a world coming to be dominated by Newton’s mechanical view of the universe which was coming to dominate.
