According to Phyllis Reynolds a few years ago this is one of the largest Magnolia macrophylla in the City, it has a dbh of around 18″….but, it has been heavily and badly pruned over the years with many hard heading back cuts with consquent heavy resprouting. Magnolias tent to be fairly strongly upright growing trees. This one has been ‘forced’ sideways and then had those limbs headed back. The tree is still trying to grow in its genetically driven form.
