This is the Columbia Plateau phsiographic region with soils that formed from closely related lava flows over a period from 17- million years ago. The lavas buried the area as much as 6,000′ deep the weight of it sinking the continent. This area is within the Columbia River watershed and is characterized as semi-arid to desert to various alpine regions.
