Semi-arid deciduous broad leafed native trees are very few east of the Cascades, until you get into higher/wetter mountain landscapes such the Ochocos, Blues and Wallowas, and even there they are often restricted to where there roots have access to streams and near surface ground water. This tree, our native Hackberry, Celtis reticulata, suffered a fire in 2025. It is one of the exceptions on the broad-leaf list, here growing in the John Day River Canyon where its roots can access subsurface water.
